I’ve been experimenting with a new AI powered photo enhancing app - Remini.
Pros -
- works really well on faces, especially eyes. I experimented with the Jedi photos (low key, largely monochromatic), and the double exposures with the star background (high key, partial faces) and was very happy with the results.
- works very well on old iPhone photos, even with shadowed, pixilated faces.
- free 🙂 (after watching an ad)
Cons -
- no real tuning capability. I believe in the paid version you can pick between several different modes, but that’s it.
- tendency to over do it and look processed.
- teeth sometimes look weird. If you look at the bottom right of Dana’s mouth in the second photo, it almost looks like a dimple on the canine. I assure you there is no dimple in real life 🙂
Between Sharpen AI (the other tool I use for this) and Remini, I think Sharpen AI is a better tool to use for smaller issues because the results tends to look more natural, and Remini is better suited for photos traditionally thought of as “unfixableâ€.
Edited to show a crop of just the face so the differences would be more noticeable.

Playing around with double exposures and getting flashbacks to watching Charmed with college roommates.
Nicole told me my backgrounds are sometimes boring. Challenge accepted.

Mama and Baby
This is the first time I attempted to edit out the gray fence lines from a photo. Don't be too impressed, the fence wasn't that pronounced in the first place.

Three days in and I'm still obsessing with AI based photo enhancing.
Here's three year old Alexis mid spin. The camera auto focused totally missed. It used to be the only thing I could do was apply filters and try to make it look like abstract art. Check out how much detail came back with Sharpen AI. The eyes! The detail on the dress! The hair!

Sharpened using Sharpen AI. Tons of detail came back in the hair, eyes and dress
After yesterday's post I came across two AI based photo enhancing tools from Topaz Labs: DeNoise AI and Sharpen AI. This is the technology I've been waiting years for and the results did not disappoint! I keep a folder of photos with flaws traditionally considered unfix-able: motion blur, camera shake, truly out of focus, etc. The tools brought new life into them, bringing back all kinds of lost detail, even recovering fine hairs and eye lashes. In fact, I now need to go back and rework my composite because the increased detail makes the head swapping obvious 🙂
If you do any photography I recommend checking out DeNoise AI and Sharpen AI.
I am really proud of myself right now.
I took this photo (technically two photos since it’s a composite) back in late September. I loved the pose and expressions, but the image itself was a little fuzzy as if it was a hair out of focus. I couldn’t figure out what had happen. The shutter speed was fast, depth of field wasn’t too shallow. I had even stepped down the ISO from what I normally shoot at. For the last two months and four days, I kept going back and forth between trying to convince myself that the image was fine the way it was, and opening it up in an editor and tinkering with it. Last night I not only finally figured out what was likely wrong, I managed to mostly fix it!

Blurry photo or a ridiculously happy baby sharpened to a ridiculous degree. Fixing the blur is beyond my current photo editing skill level, but the over sharpening is kind of neat. It gives the photo an almost sketch like feel.

Toesies! I didn’t do the best job post processing the photo, there’s still a bit too much noise, but I’m getting better 🙂.
